Tampa Bay

The Lions are off their best season in a long time and I hope that it can continue. Coming off a bye last week I was expecting a serious let down, but fortunately that didn't happen.

The Lions took advantage of two fumbles by former Lions QB Jeff Garcia to run their record to 4-2 and one half game behind the Green Bay Packers the NFC North Division. To say that so far this season for the Lions is shocking would be an umderstatement, I was expecting much of the same for the Lions this season; 2 to 4 wins.

They had to rely heavily on their defense because the offense was not very good today. The offense could only manage 278 total yards (147 passing and 131 passing) and two rushing TD's.

Had it not been for the two costly fumbles by Jeff Garcia the Lions would have more than like lost since they weren't having much success on offense.

Next Sunday the Lions hope to run their record to 5-2 with a win over the Chicago Bears.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lionsden65.blogspot.com/2007/10/week-7-detroit-lions-v-tampa-bay.html' title='Week #7 Detroit Lions v. To say the Lions are a horrible road team would be an umderstatement, since they three of the longest road loss streaks in the history of the NFL; 21, 16 and 9 games). I really don't know why they play so bad on the road, but until they figure it out they will never make it to the playoffs.

In this game Jon Kitna didn't have a very good game; 16-29, 109 yards and 2 INT's and 3 fumbles. The running game wasn't much better, but I really didn't expect much from our running game.

However, I did expect more from our defense, but they failed us also. Washington third year QB Jason Campbell had a great game against the Lions; 23-29 for 248 yards and 2 TD and no INT's. The Redskins rushed for more than 115 yards (Portis accounted for 72 of those yards).

Week #5 Detroit Lions v. Washington Redskins

The Detroit Lions are on the road on Sunday versus Washington and I beleive the Redskins will have two distinct advantages; running game and Head Joe Gibbs. The first four game the Lions could barely manage to gain as many yard on the ground as Portis has in his first three games (Lions have a total of 293 yards ans Portis has 227 through 3 games). Joe Gibbs is a coaching legend and Rod Marinelli is in his second year as the Lions head coach.

I as far as the rest of the comparisons the Lions have the advantage, QB Jon Kitna for the Lions versus Jason Campbell for Washington, you would have to give the advantage to Kitna. When comparing receivers I would give the edge to Detroit with Roy Williams and Shaun Mcdonald have more receptions combined than the whole Washing teams has (46 to 44).

With all that said I am going to predict the Lions will continue to win and will be 4-1 at the end of Sunday's game, 24-14

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lionsden65.blogspot.com/2007/10/week-5-detroit-lions-v-washington.html' title='Week #5 Detroit Lions v. That just doesn't happen usually for the Detroit Lions, I am so used to use throwing the game away in the fourth quarter.

Lions QB Jon Kitna continues to put up great number (20-24 for 247 and 2 TD's) and we actually win the games. Unlike last season when he would put up big offensive number and the Lions would still loose.

I still don't know what to think of this years Detroit Lions, 3-1 a quarter of the way through the season. I guess that means they still have plenty of time to wake up from this dream and show us diehard fans that they are still the same old hapless Lions.

We still have absolutely no running game and it doesn't look like we will get any better with Kevin Jones back in the lineup.

Great win for the Lions, but with Green Bay the best team in the NFC we aren't going to make the playoffs without a huge breakdown by the Packers.

Week #4 Detroit Lions v. For anyone that has questioned the ability of McNabb, those questions were answered. He was 21-26 for 381 yards and 4 touchdown and no interceptions. The Eagles running game had equal success against the hapless Lions defense, Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter combined for 153 yards.

The Detroit Lions offense put up some big numbers in the passing game, but unfortunately they couldn't get into the offense enough to stay close with the Eagles. QB Jon Kitna and receiver Roy Williams connected 9 times for 204 yards, including a 91 yard touchdown. But just like last year, Jon Kitna but up big numbers, but he couldn't lead the team to score many points. He finished the game with 446 yards on 29-46 passing and 1 interception and he also had two fumbles. The Lions running game was nonexitant, unless the Lions can figure out how to the run ball it will be much of the same next week.

The only think more hideous than the Lions defense had to be the Eagles throwback jerseys. I would include a picture, but the uniforms were too hard on my eyes.

NFL Week #3 Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles

It has been a pretty surprising start for the Lions and I would love to see it continue on Sunday. With the exception of our nonexistent running game our offense has been pretty impressive and I think it will continue this weekend.

The Eagles on the other hand haven't been very impressive at all, they have started the season 0-2 and the Lions could make it 0-3. Donavan McNabb is a good QB and all, but he has shown at times that he doesn't deserve all the accolades that he receives from the media.

I hope Kevin Jones finally gets to play this weekend, because if he does I think the Lions will have too much offense for the Eagles defense to handle. I will go out on a limb and predict a Lions victory on Sunday; 24-20

Week #2 Detroit Lions at 2-0

I am one surprised and happy Lions fan, I didn't expect a win, let alone in an overtime game. The Lions beat the Vikings at home at Ford Field, 20-17 on a Jason Hanson field goal in overtime.

The game went into overtime when Jason Hanson missed a 48 yard field with under a minute to go in regulation, but he redeemed himself with the game winner.

I would have never guessed that the Lions would be 2-0 after the first two games of the season and I can only hope that the magic continues.

The Lions are definitely missing James Jones something fierce, without him they have zero threat to run the ball. Think they barely broke the 40 yard mark running the ball and a single 14 run was the longest running play they could muster.

I will take the win and be happy, but I will continue to call for the firing of GM Matt Millen.

Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings

After having a fairly successful opening day against the Oakland Raiders, the Lions will be facing a tough opponent this weekend; the Minnesota Vikings. I would love to say that the Lions are up to the task of defeating the Vikings, but I am not so sure.

The main reason is that Lions have been prone to self destruction and no matter how good they look in the beginning, they find a way to loose it by the end of the game. I would actually love to see them prove me wrong and have a winning season and somehow make the playoffs.

The Lions really don't have many offensive weapons and Kitna is an average QB at best and our best RB is not likely to play. That leaves us with less than steller RB in Tatum Bell, who hasn't really done much in the NFL.

Prediction for game: Vikings 24-21

Detroit Lions Week #1

The game didn't end quite as I predicted and thankfully so. I was thinking it would be a low scoring game and the Lions would have to get lucky and eek out a win. Instead they were on the winning side of a high scoring game; 36-21 over the Oakland Raiders.

Though one game doesn't a season make, but it is a start when you have been as pathetic as the Lions have been ever since Matt Millen became President and GM of the Lions. I hope and pray that some day the Fords wake up and dump the bum and hire a real GM.

QB Jon Kitna engineered three fourth quarter scoring drives that erased 21-20 deficit and led to the victory. That of course is only part of the story; a couple of big defensive plays led to a couple of the scores. The first was an interception by Dewayne White and led to a Jason Hanson field goal and second was a fumble recovery by Dewayne White which led to a 14 yard Tatum Bell touchdown, which sealed the deal for the Lions.

I have not given Jon Kitna nearly the credit he may have deserved since becoming the Lions starting QB last year. I am of the mind set that if the QB deserves credit for the wins, then they should get just as much blame for the losses. Kitna really didn't have a bad year last year if you go strictly by stats, but when his team looses as many games as the Lions did, then all the stats really don't mean much.

2008 NFL season opens this week

As a football fan I should be much more excited about the start of football season, but since I am a Detroit Lions fan, I really don’t see much to get excited about. This will be the start of Coach Rod Marinelli’s second season as the head coach of the Lions.

If you go by some of the stories that have been written this should be a much different year for the hapless Lions, but alas I don’t see it. As long as Matt Millen continues as the GM we will continue to struggle. I think the best thing Millen can do is fire himself as the GM and go out and hire a real GM.

The Lions have the worst record over the span of time that Matt Millen was hired as the President and GM of the Detroit Lions and that in it self should be grounds for Millen’s firing. His dismal drafting record is another indictment of his inability to do his job as GM.

That is enough about Matt Millen and it is time for the prediction for the game.

The Lions play the Oakland Raiders in the opening game and I just don’t know if the Lions will have success with Jon Kitna as QB and Tatum Bell RB. Neither one has really proven to be quality players at their respective positions, so I don’t hold out much hope that it will change.

For this weekend, I am predicting a very low scoring game and the Lions will eek one out.

Prediction: Detroit 14-10 over the Raiders.

Welcome to the Lions Den

I was invited to be a part of group of football bloggers called PIGSKIN BLOGGERS.
